STITCH IN THE DITCH FOOT

Today I wanted to talk about the Stitch in the Ditch Foot.  Have any of you used one?

I purchased this foot about 4 weeks ago and have used it once.  You see that piece of metal in the middle, you are suppose to follow the ditch with that.

I am sure with all things it takes practice but....I really think I do better without it.

What are you thoughts on it, if you have used one?

I would show you what I used it on but it is for the Dot on Dots next week....

HI Barb, I did go and buy one because it seemed such a great idea but I like the walking foot more when I am quilting and mine are separate feet.... so I haven't really used it...

I have one and I'm not thrilled with it, either. Some helpers are better than others, I guess.

interesting. I haven't seen this yet.
I will say I hate when I jump to high side accidentally -

I have never heard of it, but I have just recently bought a foot just for quilting. Remember I am knew at this quilting thing. HA! HA!

Well, glad I'm not the only one....
Two months ago bought the Janome 7700 and in the deal was a ditch-foot. I do better with the normal dual feed foot. Somehow can't stay in the ditch, destpite the extra guide.... Can't really fathom why this is, but I just can't work with it.....
Maybe some more practice???

I was thinking of getting one after seeing this tutorial. http://badskirt.blogspot.com/2010/07/edgestitch-foot-demystified.html I wanted it for applique'. It is the same foot isn't it?

I have one too Barb and I also think I do better without it , it was one of those things that they told me I had to have but didn't really ;-)

I love this foot! I also use it for topstitiching when I want to get really close to the edge. That blade just follows right along.

Yours looks different than the standard foot. Did you get a new Horizon machine? or is that what you got for the 7700?

I have one and I love it but with mine I can move the needle to the left or right and sew near the ditch. It has no round hole for the needle.

No I do not have one but thought of buying one to help with my in the ditch work. I will be interested in reading all of the comments you receive. Glad you are asking.

I have used the one for my Bernina and love it. I do much better with it than without.

I've never seen one of those, but I guess it makes sense.

Hi Barb, I do have one for my Pfaff. I like it but I find that I need to move the needle slightly to the left to get it to sew where I want it to when stitching in the ditch. I also have a similar foot for my Bernina. I've used it to top stitch various things. For top stitching I move the needle way to the right or left depending on how big a space I want. I've learned to love the foot.

Hi Barb Well I have never seen one of those before! Is it one of those things that you think would help so much but really doesn't. I have bought so many of those and been disappointed at times. Blessings Sandra

I actually just discovered that I have one of these feet! I usually use a walking foot when I am doing stitch in the ditch. I think a quilt will be awfully bulky to just shove through with a regular type foot. I know you have the Horizon and that has the built in dual feed, right? If that were the case, I would think the foot would work better for you than me. Of course, maybe if I reduced the pressure... :)

I just bought one of these for my Featherweight but have yet to try it. I hope it works out for me!

Very interesting...I just purchased a new machine and had called to order a stitch-in-the-ditch foot today...I think I may have to do more research. Sounds like some love it, some don't...thanks for starting the conversation!

I don't have that foot for my machine, so I'm no help :(

I have one that connects with my walking foot for my Janome 6600, and it works great. I don't think I would like it as well though if I couldn't use the walking foot with it.

My machine has one that looks like that (as best as I can tell), but it's an edge-stitching foot... the fabric rides against that center piece of metal, and you adjust the needle to the side, and can stitch REALLY close to the edge...

I LOVE mine. I have the Janome 6600P and with the stitch in the ditch walking foot. I use it ALL the time. You may need to adjust your needle a tad to get it just right. But, so worth it for me at least.

I have a stitch in the ditch foot also and have not had too much success, but will try moving the needle a little. That may be just what makes the difference. FYI - I have a Viking sewing machine.

I had no idea you could even get these lol. I always use my open toe foot for s-i-d

Nope I've not used one...I typically use the other foot with the metal thing and line that one up and then stitch in the ditch....if you can figure out what I just said...good for you...LOL. I have a Bernina and can't think of the number of each foot right now.

I picked one up a long time ago and really like it, but admittedly need to use it more! Very useful foot! Thanks for the reminder...and I'm looking forward to seeing what you created with it.

I have never seen that type of foot, but I do have something I never used that does the same thing.

I have never seen this foot before, but I do have one that does the same thing. I must pull it out and see what it can do.

Sunnybec said...

Didn't know there was one!! I have started stitching on both sides of the ditch now as I like that better.

Debi said...

I have never seen one of those, I just use my walking foot. I wonder if there is one of those for my machine?

I bought one when they showed it at Quilt Club. Now I realize that whenever I SID, it is on quilts and I always use my walking foot when quilting!
