I just had to post this today, sorry for two post in one day....maybe some of you are asleep and this will be your post tomorrow.
If some of you had been following my personal blog (which is no more) you would already know about my pineapple plantation...yes...plantation.
When we first got here I started planting the heads of my pineapples by the house. About 9 months later the yard man got tired of them by the house and took a few of them (not all) down to the side of the hill. So....when I would buy a pineapple, I would offer the heads to the seller and if they didn't want them, I would bring them home and plant them by the side of the hill.
To my surprise the yard man had a few holes already dug for me. I had about 11 plants...I think I am down to about 7 now, have gone through several yard men.
So...today, I told my husband that I was going to go and check out my pineapples and guess what!!!!
I HAVE PINEAPPLES!!!! I have two....the other ones are not producing yet. Of course, I leave in two days and will not be able to eat the fruit of my labor (and the yard man (men), he weeded it....how easy is that)?
So let me introduce you to my two pineapples.....
aren't they something? Sure takes a long time for them to produce...but how exciting when they do.
A friend came by the other night and brought me these turtle earrings and bracelets, she said she got them for me because of my love for turtles (my turtle quilts)...aren't they adorable????

Pineapples are such interesting plants! I love the spikey leaves. Love the fruit too.
I always wondered if it really works to plant the top of a pineapple and now I can see that they grow beautifully! I'm glad you planted them. The turtle earrings and bracelet are very pretty and a thoughtful gift. At least you can wear those off the island if you have to, lol, no worries about how to ship those beauties! :-D

That is SO COOL! I've never seen a pineapple actually growing. It's sad that you won't get to enjoy them, though. :( It must be so hard for you to leave, even though you're headed home.

Wow! I have heard of planting the pineapple tops and growing new pineapples, but I have never seen it done. Amazing! Love those turtles. Very cute!
My mom grew a pineapple in a pot in the house years ago. It got knocked over some how and got broken off and never got that big. You might try it when you get moved.
I'm so glad you got to see your pineapples before you left. They're cute and I'm sure the next person who lives there will enjoy them.

When I was a young girl, I remember my grandmother having a little pineapple plant in a pot in the house. It got a pineapple on it too! It was so cool! :0)

It seems like you can produce anything you touch :-) Now you will have to make a pineapple quilt after you move!
They do have something in common - Island goodness that you will always remember fondly.
When I move to the Yucatan, I may have to try growing pineapples. I adore fresh pineapple.
How sad that you will not be able to eat the pineapples!! I'm sure someone will enjoy them. Have fun unpacking everything in your new place :0)

Love those pineapples, I wonder if you can grow them indoors in Virginia? I planted a pineapple when my daughter was 3 and it produces every year. It also moves around the garden, the mama plant dies and the baby grows so a plant moving slowly around the garden is kind of like a turtle.
What fun!!! Love the pineapples! Good luck on the move... wish you could take your yummy treats with you :o) But they will be a warm "welcome" for someone!

hope you take the time to grow a pineapple just for fun after you get moved. I bet a lot of future new friends have never seen a plant. brings back memories from when I was a kid on the islands

How long have you been in the American Samoa? How long does it take to grow a pineapple. I didn't know you planted the tops- it sounds like an interesting process. How nice you got to see it to fruition even if you won't be able to eat it..
Do turtles have a significance in Samoan culture. I know that some animals have meaning and importance in other cultures so that is why I ask- and curiosity too.
Hope your last two days are rich with fun experiences- It sounds like you have so many beautiful memories that you are taking with you.

How cool is that!? I grew orange trees once from seeds from a really good orange, but living above the tropics, I had them in pots so I could bring them in during the winter. Eventually I decided it was too much trouble & just let them go. They got to about 3 feet though.
Envious of fresh pineapple & what a shame you will miss out on the first ones!
My Mom always said you should leave your home better than you found it (Air Force family). Someone will love your pineapple plantation! Good luck with the move.

How fun to see your pineapples!! I have three plants that are thriving, but haven't yet started to produce. I am hoping they will this year. How sad for you to not be able to enjoy them after babying them this long.
