Well one day while my sewing friend was here, she left the blade out (I would never do that) and she came back to the cutting table and goes "OOPS....Safety first".....and so every since then, even when no one is around and the blade is found to be open, I go...."OOPS Safety First"....and then smile (thinking of my friend)....Of course, I would never leave the blade open...must be some Samoan elf walking around my house opening the blade, moving my glasses somwhere else, or the keys..... One time I even said it with Vance sitting by the cutting table...he goes "What"?..... I just laugh....that crazy Samoan elf is at it again!!!
So remember...."Safety First"!!!

I can't even find my rotary cutter, ever since I cleaned my sewing room! Can I borrow yours?
Since being taught that rule many years ago and having it repeated at all the workshops, I now cannot leave the blade out....it's a bit like driving without a seatbelt...it feels wierd!!!!
;o)
You are a funny girl Barb! Of course you are right, though. Those rotary cutter blades are wicked sharp. Safety first!
Barb, I have one that automatically retracts, but pressure on it will still cause a cut. however, at least a light brush against it won't cut me like an open one can.
I am bad, I almost never lock the one that retracts.
lol maybe you could convince the elves to do something constructive, like clean!
That same elf visits my sewing room sometimes. Hmmm.
Yes very good and wise advise. Oh and I must have that elf around here too, because he keeps taking my scissors!
i hate to admit this, but i leave my blade out.....oopsie and there's no elf here......
I'm guilty of leaving the blade open :( When my cutting area is nice and neat I don't mind leaving it open. Especially when I'm doing alot of quick little cuts. When I have lots of fabric piled up and am doing big cuts, I always close it. I know I should get in the habit....
Oh such a good reminder. All of my cutters retract automatically except the one in the guest room. I will use your mantra to make sure I close it right away.

Thanks for reminding the rest of us to be careful. I have to admit I almost always leave the blade open. My grandson grabbed it the other day and scared me to death.
Luckily, I've never gotten a cut on mine. I have one that automatically closes the blade....but the one I like best does NOT automatically close itself....so I must remember to do it. So far.....I've done good.
Darn elves! Are you sure they are Samoan elves, because I have them too! I bought myself a new rotary cutter a few weeks ago and I love it. It only opens when I squeeze the handle. Then it closes automatically. The only thing is, I can never find it. Darn elves! Oh, but I said that already!
That's the same brand of cutter that i use. I have 2 of them. They are getting harder to find.
I dropped a rotary cutter on my foot, once...thought I was going to bleed to death. It wasn't THAT bad - and didn't need stitches - but feet bleed a LOT.
Ever since then, I try super hard to remember to close it up.
