When I was a young girl I would take small strands of my hair and just curl it up like a snail and then put two bobby pins criss cross....those were pin curls.... When I woke up, I would take out all of the pin curls and my hair would be so curly. Didn't do that very often because it was hard to pin curl my long hair.
A few weeks ago my sister showed me her quilt (Beverly) she had made using the "Pin Curl" pattern by "Me and My Sisters Design". Beverly used Marblelicious fabrics and boy was it beautiful.
I kept thinking that my Samoan Fabrics would work up nicely with this pattern...and was I ever right!!!
Now back to the sewing table!!
Wow, Barb I just love these blocks. They would look great with some of my blue and white Asian fabrics too! I saw you title and immediately thought of my mother putting pin curls in my hair just as you described. Thanks for the memories!
ReplyDeleteLOL I remembered those pin curles. I had short baby fine hair and those pin curles were a nightly ritual. Love that quilt and have always wanted to make. I bet in Samoan fabrics it would be lovely.
ReplyDeleteI do remember pin curls and some type of pink roller thing that you rolled up you hair a push the two ends together and they made pin curls too. I love your quilt blocks the have a tropical feel to them.
ReplyDeleteLike the design. I definitely remember sleeping on pin curls!
ReplyDeleteThe blocks are wonderful! I used to tape my sideburns into curls...guess I am dating myself!
ReplyDeleteGreat choice in pattern!
ReplyDeleteHa ha.. I remember my mother putting her hair in pin curls that very same way. I couldn't imagine how she slept with all those pins sticking into her head. Y'all suffered to be beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAt least the pin curl quilt did not require that type of suffering!
Pin curls. That brings back memories. My mom loved to have my hair curly.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes! They look great! I use to used those pink sponge curlers and do the ends of my hair and sleep with them. What a fun memory.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! I love the bright colors and the pretty prints!!!
ReplyDeleteCute blocks!!! Oh yes I recall those pin curls!
ReplyDeleteI did pin curls too! My hair takes curl real easily so big swirls were best, otherwise I looked like a poodle! LOL
ReplyDeleteReally cute quilt design. Gorgeous fabrics.

ps - I too remember pinning my hair for curls. Difficult with long hair and even more so trying to sleep that way. I recall when they came out with pink foamie curlers how much easier it was to sleep and get curly hair the next morning.
You are so right....those are great blocks!!! I love those. I too remember doing my hair like that...but only once because it turned out like cork screws...LOL. My grandmother did that every night and I loved watching her.

I use to pin my long hair in curls to and looked like a big fuzz ball in morming .lol But made excellent blocks with Batiks.
ReplyDeleteI really like that pattern. Very cute! Cuter than the hard-to-sleep on ones. What we used to do!
ReplyDeleteI like the blocks a lot more than the memories I associate with pin curls or the metal curlers that my mother rolled my hair in before them we started using bobby pins. The white makes the Samoan fabric pop.
ReplyDeletestunning blocks! Love those fabrics you have used.
