I got the idea over at Sew Cal Gal's, I ran all over town for the valentine M & M's...couldn't find any. These were for a church Dance.
Now for life's small disappointments. I made this trash can for the Moda Challenge and well...it didn't quite make it. What I realized is they were looking for simplicity. Maybe I have a little too much trashy taste in me?
Sometimes (I am sure I am not the only one) that we spend more time dusting ourselves off to get back on the horse than we do actually riding the horse. My poor knees are almost thread bare.
Congrats to those that made honorable mention and the four that made it into the contest.
This reminds me of the song "I like my women a little on the trashy side"...ha!!! Maybe my taste is a little on the trashy side????

Oh well...for those of you wanting to know how I made this trash can (which I love having in my sewing room).
Here goes
I took my ugly gray trash can, took my batting and made a template out of the batting as you see here:
I cut it to size, May I suggest that you cut it about an inch bigger on each side for it kinda shrinks some when sewing. Here is my template.
Backing - (I did not use my most expensive because no one will see it). Made the backing a little larger than the batting.
Then I got my honey bun and started sewing strips. The first strip is face up with the next face down (right sides together). Sew 1/4 inch.... Then you just repeat the step, sew another strip face down (right sides together) on top of the next strip.
This is what you will see. I just fingered pressed. Maybe I should have gone to the iron each time?
Keep sewing all the way down your template. My trash can was smaller at the bottom so I adjusted the stitches so they would taper as I sewed down the strip, so my strips were wider at the top and smaller at the bottom to accommodate this difference. It doesn't look this way in this picture but I figured this problem out as I went along.
This is what you will get.....I wrapped the piece around my basket and trimmed the excess.
Then I did a binding as you would a quilt.
Got my trusty glue gun and glued this to my basket.
I chose from the remaining strips pieces about six inches long or there about, scrunched them up and glued them to the back of the buckle like so.
Then I glued it to the trash can.
Well, this certainly frees up some of my March. March has already gotten away from me but now I will find the time to do those things I am committed to do and hopefully, free up some more of my time to do those things I want to do.

Nichole will chose a winner for the Buttercup Basket giveaway, if you missed it, just return to home and look a few post down (yes, I am too lazy to link it for you, no shame here)...oh...you say I am grumpy???
Well...I just drowned my sorrows in a bowl of Cheeros and bananas....oh yess......no shame here. There was no chocolate to be had in this house, trust me, I looked!!!
I love your basket! Thanks for the tutorial.
ReplyDeleteYour the winner in my book.
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling disappointed too. Love the tut. Thanks!

ReplyDeletehugs
beebee
Very cute Barb. I like your M&Ms too.
ReplyDeleteI think your wastepaper basket is so good! Reminds me of the patchwork ones they have in Bangkok.
ReplyDeleteLove the trash can! Thanks for the tut!! Bummer on no chocolate!! I just had half a marching turtle sandwich! Had to have my salt fix!!
ReplyDeleteIt's not trashy at all. I loved it the first time you showed it and I think it's sweet still. :D
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial for your trash can beautification project. All I have is very ugly trash cans, so I look forward to trying this. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGlad you have fun with those candy packages. I'm thinking about making a version for St. Patrick's Day.

I think your basket idea is quite clever, and you are certainly a winner in my book. It takes a lot of courage and creativity to enter a competiton like this one-good for you. Now go out tomorrow and buy chocolate - a big bag- you deserve it! Take care!
ReplyDeleteLovely as always Barb. If you lived closer, I would bring you my emergency chocolate stash....which I of course deny having!
ReplyDeleteHugs.
What a great idea to cover an ugly trash can. Thanks for the tutorial!!
ReplyDeleteAh, Barb, bummer! But your trash catcher is quite fun! Dust off and get ready for the next competition.
ReplyDeleteI think the bow is a perfect finishing touch to a fabulous bin quilt. I think it's a winner! And I love the candy hearts too.
ReplyDeleteI love your trash can!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your trash can!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a smart and creative way to pretty up a much-needed sewing item...our trash can! Thank you for putting together a tutorial and sharing it with us Barb.
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't win, I think it's a great idea.
ReplyDeleteHow cute is your trash can! What a cute idea for candy. Hope you have great sewing day.
ReplyDeleteYour basket is a cute idea, so don't go thinking that Moda has to validate that. You liked it and it looks like a lot of others like it and we all now know how to make it without the fuss of waiting for Moda to get around to deciding to share it. And, for my two cents, often I'm not even close to impressed with the stuff that makes it to the Moda Bake Shop...just sayin'...(far too simple...hahaha...) So stop drowning your sorrows and get back into your sewing room and CREATE! You're good at it!
ReplyDeleteI really like your trash can idea. I need to make one for my "ugly" trash can in the bathroom. Hey, maybe I have fabric to match my the mat on back of my toilet!
ReplyDeleteI do not think your trash can is trash. i think it is a treasure. Thank you for haring your tutorial.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the tutorial. I liked the trash can but I really liked the pillow. Didn't you post that also? Hope that one faired better, that was fantastic. It actually led me to think of a steering wheel cover (don't ask me how I made the connections, I'm not even sure...) but I never got around to trying to make one.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the trash can... very pretty and creative. It's hard to figure out what judges are looking for when it's such an open competition.
I spend so much time climbing back on the horse, that there should be a ladder attached to the saddle, for cryin' out loud. LOL
ReplyDeleteWell, I like your trashcan anyway, girl, and thanks for the tutorial. I have one shaped like that, and I think it needs dressing up! :)
I love you waste bin and will be making one from your tutorial.
ReplyDeleteI love your trash can, so sorry Barb, it is lovely though.
ReplyDeleteI love the trashcan, how cute
ReplyDeleteI like your trash can and I totally get what you mean. Last summer I entered a challenge at the local quilt shop. I had never done a challenge before. I worked so hard on my entry and I was so disappointed in the response as in no response. I am not sure I will do another one. I think I prefer to fly under the radar.
ReplyDeleteBarb, I think your trash can is awesome...and not "trashy" at all! I have to say, in all honesty, that I thought a lot of the entrants into the "Slice" contest didn't get the theme...a lot of them weren't even things you'd use in an "office", unless I don't know what people use in offices these days! I thought your idea was wonderful, and IMHO, I think you should have been up there with the winners. Not saying it just because we're friends, either! :o)
ReplyDeleteXOXO,
Cyndi
I love your trash bin! (Its the bow, I know it!) How very clever you are!
ReplyDeleteSorry your trash can didn't make the cut, but it's just so cute! Thanks for sharing it with us! :0)
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so sorry. I love your basket. I know how one little thing, one little comment, can set us back and we are in a funk for days! I don't know why we let other's opinions and words or slights have such an effect on us. I love what you do and a lot of people do too. Remember the saying about "not everyone like my squaw. Now get back on that horse!
ReplyDeleteMy sewing area has five, that's right - 5
ReplyDeletewaste baskets in my sewing area.
Guess I'd better get busy, huh ! ! !
hugs
Gerry
You're still a winner in our eyes!!
ReplyDeleteWay to go, Barb. Now we all have "trash can envy". It's beautiful and you should be very proud.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I mean REALLY what a great idea! So much better than that ugly plain plastic garbage can!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tutorial!! I love it!! It's not "trashy"!! One of these days I'll dress up my trash can!! I love those little candy packets!!
ReplyDeleteI think your trash can is adorable. Maybe it is too old-fashioned for the Moda people.
ReplyDeleteToo bad you wren't selected , I think it is a marvelous idea and I would love to make one for my sewing room so thanks for the great tutorial .
ReplyDeleteLove your trash can! It's almost too pretty to put trash inside. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial, also.
What were they thinking!! I love this and I happen to have a few plastic ones that would look great with pink fabrics! Thanks for showing us how.
ReplyDeletelove the basket.... thanks for the tut... we all think you're a winner!
ReplyDeleteHugz
Love this girlfriend! You make me laugh so hard you trashy woman!!! Haaaaaaaaaaa!
ReplyDeleteThis is going on my (trash) bucket list! How clever to decorate something so plain! And who doesn't have a trashy trash can in their sewing room that could use a little sprucing up??? You're a winner in my book! :)
ReplyDeletewhat a cute basket and I love your favors!
ReplyDeletethat is soooo cute! WOW!! Perfect for a guest room, not an everyday use kinda' room.
ReplyDeleteI love this trash can cover...it really is too beautiful to hold trash......It could be a magazine holder or a knitting holder...I can just see it with some balls of yarn and a pair of pretty knitting needles sticking out....It really is THAT Pretty.
