I got the idea over at Sew Cal Gal's, I ran all over town for the valentine M & M's...couldn't find any. These were for a church Dance.
Now for life's small disappointments. I made this trash can for the Moda Challenge and well...it didn't quite make it. What I realized is they were looking for simplicity. Maybe I have a little too much trashy taste in me?Sometimes (I am sure I am not the only one) that we spend more time dusting ourselves off to get back on the horse than we do actually riding the horse. My poor knees are almost thread bare.

Here goes
I took my ugly gray trash can, took my batting and made a template out of the batting as you see here:
I cut it to size, May I suggest that you cut it about an inch bigger on each side for it kinda shrinks some when sewing. Here is my template.
Backing - (I did not use my most expensive because no one will see it). Made the backing a little larger than the batting.
Then I got my honey bun and started sewing strips. The first strip is face up with the next face down (right sides together). Sew 1/4 inch.... Then you just repeat the step, sew another strip face down (right sides together) on top of the next strip.
This is what you will see. I just fingered pressed. Maybe I should have gone to the iron each time?
Keep sewing all the way down your template. My trash can was smaller at the bottom so I adjusted the stitches so they would taper as I sewed down the strip, so my strips were wider at the top and smaller at the bottom to accommodate this difference. It doesn't look this way in this picture but I figured this problem out as I went along.
This is what you will get.....I wrapped the piece around my basket and trimmed the excess.
Then I did a binding as you would a quilt.
Got my trusty glue gun and glued this to my basket.
I chose from the remaining strips pieces about six inches long or there about, scrunched them up and glued them to the back of the buckle like so.
Then I glued it to the trash can.
Well, this certainly frees up some of my March. March has already gotten away from me but now I will find the time to do those things I am committed to do and hopefully, free up some more of my time to do those things I want to do.

Your basket is a cute idea, so don't go thinking that Moda has to validate that. You liked it and it looks like a lot of others like it and we all now know how to make it without the fuss of waiting for Moda to get around to deciding to share it. And, for my two cents, often I'm not even close to impressed with the stuff that makes it to the Moda Bake Shop...just sayin'...(far too simple...hahaha...) So stop drowning your sorrows and get back into your sewing room and CREATE! You're good at it!

Thanks for posting the tutorial. I liked the trash can but I really liked the pillow. Didn't you post that also? Hope that one faired better, that was fantastic. It actually led me to think of a steering wheel cover (don't ask me how I made the connections, I'm not even sure...) but I never got around to trying to make one.
Anyway, the trash can... very pretty and creative. It's hard to figure out what judges are looking for when it's such an open competition.
I spend so much time climbing back on the horse, that there should be a ladder attached to the saddle, for cryin' out loud. LOL

I like your trash can and I totally get what you mean. Last summer I entered a challenge at the local quilt shop. I had never done a challenge before. I worked so hard on my entry and I was so disappointed in the response as in no response. I am not sure I will do another one. I think I prefer to fly under the radar.
Barb, I think your trash can is awesome...and not "trashy" at all! I have to say, in all honesty, that I thought a lot of the entrants into the "Slice" contest didn't get the theme...a lot of them weren't even things you'd use in an "office", unless I don't know what people use in offices these days! I thought your idea was wonderful, and IMHO, I think you should have been up there with the winners. Not saying it just because we're friends, either! :o)

Oh, I'm so sorry. I love your basket. I know how one little thing, one little comment, can set us back and we are in a funk for days! I don't know why we let other's opinions and words or slights have such an effect on us. I love what you do and a lot of people do too. Remember the saying about "not everyone like my squaw. I love this trash can cover...it really is too beautiful to hold trash......It could be a magazine holder or a knitting holder...I can just see it with some balls of yarn and a pair of pretty knitting needles sticking out....It really is THAT Pretty.
