Here is what I am doing with the buttons from ButtonMad. I finally gave up looking for the buttons and just adapted my pattern of Sun Bonnet Sue's to the buttons that just arrived.
I had a different friend come over yesterday. She is just now getting into quiting and her question was.....when you do the backing of a quilt, do you worry about where the seam is when you have to put piece the backing together. She felt it had to be centered in the quilt. So my question to you is, does it matter?

I don't think it matters. It is nice if it is laying straight, but you might have 2 unequal pieces, so it couldn't be in the middle.
Your Sue is very cute. I don't have a set rule about the seam, I just do what I need to.

I think that it really should NOT be in the center either across or top to bottom. Quilts that are used typically get folded on those lines. That would add to stress on that one long seam possibly causing it to break sooner.
It doesn't matter to me. As long as it lays flat with no puckers!
I don't care if it's centered, just that it's straight. However, most of my quilts have the wide fabric so there's no piecing.
Nope! I feel that by the time all layers are sandwiched and quilted or tied, nothing relating to the back seams matter. They just aren't visible from the front, and that's good because it frees us up to do some magnificent "back art"!
I try to center my seam but one it is quilted you really don't notice.
I try not to center it as I agree with Gene's statement about folding. Your quilts get folded in the center alot and alot of pressure or stress is put on those seams. For that reason, I don't center my seams.
I like to have my seams off center. If I try to center them then I will feel like it is obvious when I don't get it right.
Definitely NOT in the center (for reasons of wear along fold lines) although you should also refold your quilts fairly often so they don't wear along the folds. When using 2 WOF pieces to make a back, I slipt one in half and add a half to each side of the full WOF piece. That way I have 2 seams , neither in the center.

That Sun Bonnet Sue is so adorable! And since I've only made four quilts so far, I can't say what I "usually" do. I don't think mine have been centered but I just want them to be straight! :o)

I was going to say what Gene said! If the seam is down the middle, it gets stressed everytime you fold it and may pop. I always put mine off center. That way, if it's crooked, it's okay! I would have too much trouble lining it down the center anyway!

I always thought that the back seam should be off center -- but I'm not sure it's worth debating about. :)

I don't think it matters. The back is the back - some of my backs are works of art and some are, well, just quilt backs.
Love your Sue!! I really don't care where the seams are in the back- since they are normally quilted over lots of times I don't think they will pull apart.

Yes it does matter not so much for appearance but for the longevity of the quilt. I agree with Gene!

Your Sue is sweet Barb and I dont think it matters where the seams are on the back as long as they are neat and straight. YOu really dont see or look at the back that much anyway. Hugs Vicki x
Your Sue is very cute! I agree with Gene and I do my backs just like Mary L, even if I piece the back.
Your block is so sweet! I don't worry about the seam too much. Sometimes there is even more than one if I have to use smaller pieces of fabric.
I do what Mary L. does. If I have to use two pieces for the back I cut one in half the long way and attach each piece to either side of the full width. When I do 'back art' it doen't matter where the seam is. I love your little Sue! So cute.
Cute little Sue block....one I will do someday. Before wide backing material became more readily available I put seams where ever I had to but I really recommend using the wide backing IMHO :0)

Mine are not usually in the center , I usually cut the piece I need to add into two pieces and add it to each side and that seems to work well.
I agree with Gene on this one. Less stress.
