I have always loved that song.
These were given to me by a friend in Texas, she knew I was collecting wheat dishes and well...she saw them on ebay ..... end of story. Lucky me...I love them.
I taught her father and mother to quilt, if you have been reading my blog for a while, you will have heard me mention that I taught an older couple to quilt, this is them. They made me this quilt. That is where the memories come in...I can barely stand to see this quilt without crying because he is suffering from alheizmers. They were the first friends that Vance and I ever had as a young married couple. Even tho they were old enough to be our parents we enjoyed their company, dominos, and cards.
They have treated our sons as their own grandchildren. So this quilt will hold alot of sweet memories for me and for my children for they made them each a quilt as well. I will show my husbands another time.
I taught them when they were in their middle seventies and she has said to me on numereous occasions that she wished I had taught her sooner.
They got me hooked on garage sales....and he taught me to dicker with the prices and if I was a coward, he would do it for me. In the post coming up, I will show you all the dishes that I collected with him and his wife. You may tire of me and my dishes but I did get rid of alot before moving to Samoa....lukcy you!
What a sweet story!
ReplyDeleteOh Barb, what a sweet friendship. We also were befriended by an older couple when we were first married, and they have been such a blessing in our lives.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful memories. They will always bring smiles.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you have such a special memory from them, Barb!!! I am sure they hold a special place in your family.
ReplyDeleteI actually remember those dishes. Does that mean I am vintage?
What a terrific little quilt. I have one similar to it from my grandmother, only giant-sized and all in polyester; it's the warmest thing ever!
ReplyDeleteBring on the dishes, I love dishes!

I remember that my great aunt had a set like kind of this. She called them her Picnic set. When the family would all get together, my great aunts always brought real dish ware....no paper plates for those ladies!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful memory quilt Barb!!

Now that is a great story!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful story! Isn't it great when we share something we love, it brings such rewards! I think friendships with all age groups really makes us blossum!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love those stories Barb. Every person who crosses our path is put there for a good reason. Just as special as they are to you, you are that special to them.
ReplyDeleteVery Pretty Glassware. You know me I adore dishes!
ReplyDeleteBring them on! We too had some very dear older friends in our lives. I had one. Miss A, when I was all of 7-12. We had no TV so I would go visit her for chores and we would watch the soaps...;-)
Sweet memories stay with us when our dear ones leave us and become sweeter over time.
Hugs,
Lola

ReplyDeleteI love the wheat glasses. I don't recall seeing that design before. I collected dishes for a time but when I got 10 different sets of dishes, Hubbykins made me get rid of them. I loved your story about your friends. :)
ReplyDeleteTire of you? Never!
ReplyDeleteBring on the garage sales stuff. Oh, did I say I loved this post? Great story.
Wow great memories!
ReplyDeleteLove the wheat dishes. I was thinking what a pretty quilt the colors would make and the quilting possibilities (for someone with experience) are wonderful - a soft, pretty quilt with lots of gentle movement in the quilting.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful touching post. How lucky that you all found each other. And to have the quilts, those are surly a treasure. I know it is hard for you Barb, but so wonderful that you can still be there for them.
ReplyDeleteIt's a truly wonderful thing what quilting does. It brings the most fantastic people together. Stitched with love and friendship and the simple sweetness that is treasured forever. Lives are always blessed with the stitches of a quilt and the warm of the hug that they give.
ReplyDeleteYa'll are truly blessed by each other.
xx, shell
Those glasses are just wonderful... I have always noticed wheat prints since I grew up on a farm. What wonderful memories you have and what a wonderful gift you shared with your friends by teaching them to quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful story and you have lovely memories too everytime you see the quilt, or the dishes.
