ANTIQUE YO YO QUILT

If I wasn't so lazy, I would retake these pictures...but call me lazy...call me cold...call me real cold.

So......

Vance and I have this friend in Texas. Vance has known her since his youth and I since we got married.

She came to me one day and gave me this quilt. The yo yo's are 1-1/2 inches in diameter finished.

I told her to give it to one of her daughters....to beautiful to just give away.

She said that her daughters would not appreciate it like I would. I can't vouch for her daughters but I do so love this quilt.

It was hanging in my foyer in Texas.

I don't know how old it is so I am showing some close ups....this one is not too good.

Here is a better one.....I told you all that I turn into a reptile when it is cold...the colder it gets the slower I go. I am old lady slow today. The mail man came and neither Vance or I want to walk out in the cold for the mail....pretty pathetic are we.

  1. What a beautiful yo-yo quilt! She definitely chose a good home for it.

My husband and I had the same argument today about the mail. :-)

  2. Burrr...... I also do not like the cold. And even though we live in Florida, it has been cold COLD here. I am ready for our balmy days to return. It is a very beautiful quilt. What a treasure.

  3. You poor things!! I hate walking out to get the mail and I wasn't just yesterday living in the tropics! Well, hibernate and sew. And I also love that quilt. I can't imagine ever using one on the bed. We are just too hard on things. But that would be gorgeous on a bed or hanging.

  4. It really is gorgeous, Barb. How fortunate that she gave it to you for safe keeping.

I can relate to your cold. We moved from several years in Hawaii to England and I seriously thought I would die of frost bite.

  6. LOL - nothing like throwing you right into winter instead of giving you a proper fall to try to acclimate yourself! Dang job moves.

I hope you warm up soon but with the winds due to come in tomorrow, I think plenty of tea and hot cocoa are in orde.

  7. That's a pretty amazing quilt. You couldn't actually use it at a bed covering, could you? It looks very delicate. What a gift!

You must be having such fun unpacking and rediscovering all your treasures!

  10. Beautiful yo-yo quilt. What a treasure. Absolute treasure. I'd love to be able to feel the weight of it, admire the colors & fabrics, and absorb the memories that were made with each stitch. Sad that the original quilter's family didn't appreciate it enough to hand down the legacy, but I'm truly so happy that it ended up with you and you appreciate it. I'm sure the creator is smiling with delight. Iknow I would.

And, I can understand why you may let your mail sit there. You might be on to a new idea. Maybe someone needs to design heated walking stones and mailbox heaters. Of course, sweet Kelly thinks I"m a So. Cal. wimp, which I know I am. We are in the 60's and I"m freezing and cuddled up in a quilt.

  15. Wow! Those yo-yo's aren't very big in diameter. How big is the whole quilt? It is awesome!

  16. You do need to get reacclimated to cold weather, don't you? LOL. What a change it must be! And what a treasure of a quilt! I have a yo-yo quilt my youngst son bought at a yard sale, but the yo-yo's are quite a bit bigger than yours. You are so lucky to have it.

  17. I have a yo yo quilt like that--my Grandma made it in the 30's from all the feed/sugar sack prints. She had it "bare" like yours for 60 years, then had her church's quilting ladies tie it to a white background. I love and cherish it and was so glad it came to me when she moved to the nursing home. By that time her dementia was so bad she didn't even know she had made it. So sad.

  18. Such a lucky lady you are -- what a lovely quilt.
I'm not too keen on cold weather either. The Weather Channel says it's -8 degrees here right now. BRRRRRR!!!!!!

  19. I love the Yo Yo quilt and the table cover...looks like needlework? It sure is beautiful. I don't share your appreciation for old dishes so I'll have to learn what to look out for so when I see a "treasure" I'll know to grab it for you. I have a friend who likes hammered tin....she has had to teach me what to look for so if and when I run into a "treasure"...I'll be sure to recognize it and pick it up.

    Smiles,
    Kelly
